Young Actresses Have Trouble Speaking

When your grade-school teachers told you to “speak up,” they knew what they were talking about. Apparently, teachers today aren’t doing their job, not to mention drama-school instructors. A phenomenon known as “vocal fry” is everywhere, and it’s alienating or pissing people off in all walks of life, not just onscreen where it makes the young women, like Shailene Woodley (pictured), difficult to comprehend. Further: “Vocal fry involves dropping one’s voice to the lowest register, causing the vocal chords to flutter, which creates a creaking sound.” Annoying! Listen to Howard Stern discuss the phenomenon, with examples, here.
