Chita Rivera Opens In “The Visit”
You can’t kill the 81-year-old Chita Rivera (pictured), and you can’t kill the Kander and Ebb show “The Visit,” whose latest incarnation has opened at the Williamstown Theater Festival. My spies have been telling me mixed things about the production, directed by John Doyle, but the Boston Globe says the show “is an engrossing meditation, somber and darkly funny by turns, on love gone wrong, on the slippery slope of human morality once greed enters the picture, on revenge, corruption, and hypocrisy.” I think it would be a mistake, however, to try to move the production to Broadway, unless it were recast with Angela Lansbury, who has millions more fans than the beloved Miss Chita. Off-Broadway would be a better bet.
