Your Weekend: A Selective Guide

Movies: I never said that “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” is the best film of the year: I said it was the best Hollywood film of the year. And it is. “Boyhood,” on the other hand, may in fact be the best movie of the year. Television: I can’t bring myself to watch “Rising Star,” the singing competition hosted by Josh Groban, on Sundays, but I have tried to watch “The Leftovers.” Meh. Music: You know you have geezer creep when you find yourself listening to Neil Diamond’s latest, “All-Time Greatest Hits.” Books: I discovered a Leon Uris novel I’d missed the first time round: “The Haj.” Edward Klein’s junky book about the supposed feud between the Clintons and the Obamas is outselling Hillary’s treatise. Sports: Is the World Cup really truly ending on Sunday? Please, God, say it’s twue! Finally: I treasure people who know how to listen, because there are so few of them left on earth.
