“Baby Got Back”: Awesome Or Asinine?
That’s the (predictable) debate that has arisen since a video of the Seattle Symphony orchestra’s performance with Sir Mix-a-Lot and a few dozen boogie-ing women started racking up the YouTube views. But that clip came from an actual concert of contemporary classical music, including a premiere by one Gabriel Prokofiev. A seven-minute video of the “Baby Got Back, the Sir Mix-a-Lot tune, opening with the lyric “I like big butts and I cannot lie,†has stirred both admiration and dismay among other classical musicians, who have argued online about about its merits.
