National Magazine Awards: Zadie Smith
I usually don’t pay much attention to the National Magazine Awards: they are decided upon by small groups of people who like having lunch with each other and tend to reward their own cozy chums. But when I looked over the list of 2014 nominees I was grateful to see the name Zadie Smith (pictured). I had somehow missed reading her entry, “The Embassy of Cambodia,” published by The New Yorker in February 2013. Unlike Smith’s last novel, “NW,” which I didn’t care for, “Cambodia” sticks in the brain.
