Russian Performers Still Afraid Of Putin
Conductor Valery Gergiev, opera singer Anna Netrebko, and top Russian dancers are all expected to perform for Friday’s opening ceremony at Sochi, or at the closing ceremony on February 23rd. And while Gergiev, Netrebko, and their ilk say they don’t discriminate when it comes to whom they work with, they are all still terrified of criticizing the government of Vladimir Putin, no matter how much it violates human rights through law. Gergiev’s latest interview is craven in the guise of being even-handed.
