Your Weekend: A Selective Guide
Movies: “Labor Day” has a couple of good actors: Josh Brolin and Kate Winslet. “Tim’s Vermeer” is a documentary about one of my favorite painters. Television: Don’t miss Friday night’s PBS broadcast of “Barrymore,” starring Christopher Plummer. On Sunday, PBS (“Downton” and “Sherlock”) and HBO (“Girls” and “Looking”) are just about the only networks brave enough to air new fare opposite the Super Bowl. Music: The Grammys gave a boost to CDs by Daft Punk, Kacey Musgraves, and Lorde. Books: If you’ve never read a novel by Penelope Fitzgerald, you are missing out. Remedy your illiteracy here. Sports: The Super Bowl is inevitable, so why not relax and enjoy it. I’m betting on Denver. Finally: It’s been a long time since I’ve gotten sick of winter this early in the year. But I’m trying to change my attitude.
