What To Know About “Monuments Men”
George Clooney’s movie “Monuments Men,” out next week, makes no mention of Lynn H. Nicholas, who in 1994 published “The Rape of Europa: The Fate of Europe’s Treasures in the Third Reich and the Second World War.†That’s the book — the research — to which we owe the story of the Monuments Men. But the Wall Street Journal has published a must-read piece by Nicholas called “What the Monuments Men Wrought.” It mentions Jan van Eyck’s “Ghent Altarpiece” (1432), pictured, among other works, and what happened to them after the war.
