Grammys: What I Loved And Loathed
Watching Stevie Wonder and Pharrell perform “Get Lucky” had to count as a Grammy highlight for me, and, even though the appearance of the robotians known as Daft Punk was supposed to be the number’s highlight, I’m sure the folks at home were thinking: they aren’t singing so why the hell are they there? (Complete list of winners here.) For most of the evening, my pleasures involved the reaction shots of audience members dancing to the performers. You haven’t lived until you’ve seen Yoko Ono, in dark glasses, groove to Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson. Or Katy Perry get down to Kendrick Lamar and Imagine Dragons tearing up the stage in what had to be seen as the most electrifying performance of the evening. The low point had to be the Macklemore & Ryan Lewis song “Same Love,” introduced by Queen Latifah and joined by Madonna. The song is uplifting and inspiring and heart-lifting: it speaks for itself. The Grammys trashed it with closet case Latifah and a mass Moonie wedding that may have been thrilling to the participants but which barely registered on television.
