“Groundhog”: From Sondheim To Minchin

“Groundhog Day” is one of Stephen Sondheim‘s favorite movies, but he decided years ago, after an extended flirtation, that he wasn’t the one to turn it into a musical. Others have now been emboldened. The 1993 Bill Murray movie is being turned into a stage musical by two of the creators of “Matilda.” Tim Minchin and Matthew Warchus wrote the music for and directed “Matilda” for the Royal Shakespeare Company and turned it into a hit in London and New York. They have been working quietly with Danny Rubin, who created the screenplay for the 1993 movie about a dispirited weatherman forced to relive the same day over and over again until he has a sunnier outlook on life. No word when this project will get off the ground.
