“Wolf Hall” & “Bodies” Get Good Reviews

“Wolf Hall” and “Bring Up The Bodies,” Hilary Mantel‘s two novels about Henry VIII’s advisor Thomas Cromwell, won all the literary prizes and sold gobs. But I can’t tell you how many of my friends — American and British, young and old — found the books disappointing: a crashing bore. Maybe those friends will get on better with the new RSC stage adaptation that has just opened at Stratford (reviews here and here), or with the inevitable “Masterpiece”-type screen adaptation. Onstage, Ben Miles and Lydia Leonard (pictured) star as Cromwell and Anne Boleyn.
