Zhivago’s Winter Was Much Much Colder
Whenever I grow discouraged about weather like today’s in New York — 7 inches of snow and 11 degrees Fahrenheit — I watch the brutal winter scenes in “Dr. Zhivago” and feel better. To be fair, not all the frigid sequences in this 1964 movie, directed by David Lean and starring Omar Sharif (pictured), are brutal. When the Zhivagos escape the city for their country estate in Varykino, there’s a moment, which I haven’t been able to find on YouTube (here are other bits, though), when a little girl frolics in the white stuff and sings, “Ho ho ho, I like the snow!” That’s the attitude.
