Jackie’s Pink Suit: Not A True Chanel

The pink suit that Jackie Kennedy wore 50 years ago in Dallas is the most iconic outfit in American history. But it wasn’t real — as in made by — Chanel, as many people still mistakenly assume. Chanel’s current resident genius, Karl Lagerfeld, last year said that the raspberry-pink bouclé skirt suit with blue collar was actually a ‘line-by-line’ recreation by American dressmaker, Oleg Cassini. Others have said the outfit was made for Mrs. Kennedy in New York by a dressmaking establishment called Chez Ninon. Whatever the case, we can say that the garment was made to order using materials supplied by Chanel in Paris. But it was not made by the French house and so cannot be called a Chanel.
