“Gigi” Is Coming Back To Broadway
I can’t quite believe that a musical whose most famous number is “Thank Heaven for Little Girls” is going to return to Broadway. But I know plenty of senior citizens who saw the original Broadway production in 1973 (based on the 1958 MGM movie, based on the 1951 Anita Loos play, based on work by Colette) who have hungered for another chance to see the show. I wonder, however: just as no revival of “Follies” can afford to be as lavish as the original, so “Gigi” will probably not return to New York in its long-ago splendor. But I’ll be anxious to see what director Eric Schaeffer, whose production will have a pre-Broadway run at the Kennedy Center in D.C. in January 2015, will do to zhuzh up “Gigi.”
