Your Weekend: A Selective Guide

Movies: Boo hiss on “Ender’s Game.” “Last Vegas” is a genre to which I’m allergic: geezer comedy. Can’t wait to see “Dallas Buyer’s Club.” Television: Friday brings Jake Heggie’s “Moby Dick” opera on PBS. Also Friday: Aziz Ansari’s new Netflix comedy special. And on Sunday’s pile-up hour (9 pm), keep an eye on “Boardwalk Empire,” which has gotten good again. Music: Arcade Fire’s “Reflektor,” with its Haitian-inflected rhythms, is pretty great. Anyone who wants to know why I don’t love the holidays should check out the current-best-selling Christmas album in the U.S. — from the “Duck Dynasty” folks. Books: Russell Shorto’s “Amsterdam: A History of The World’s Most Liberal City” was eye-opening even for Holland-ophiles like me. Sports: Wasn’t the Red Sox victory revolting? Thank God that basketball has started! Finally: We get an extra hour sleep on Saturday with the time change.
