“Brooklyn: Nine-Nine”: I Laughed A Little

Parks and Recreation” is one of the few current TV sitcoms that I can watch straight through, so I tuned in to “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” a new comedy last night on Fox, because it was created by the “Parks” guys: Dan Goor and Michael Schur. I’m certainly not going to recommend it based on one episode, but I did laugh two or three times. The show stars Andy Samberg as Jake Peralta, a detective who jokes around constantly but is amazingly effective at his job. Then there’s straight-laced, no-nonsense commanding officer Capt. Ray Holt (Andre Braugher), whose stone face puts a damper on Peralta’s comic hijinks, at least initially. He also wants everybody to wear a tie and be professional. He’s also gay — a wonderfully constructed idea because by not “acting like it,” the Holt character spoofs how television treats gay characters.
