Steve, Angie, Angela To Receive Oscars: But Jolie Choice Kicks Up Some Controversy
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Thursday that Steve Martin, Angela Lansbury and costume designer Piero Tosi will receive Honorary Awards and Angelina Jolie will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the fifth annual Governors Awards, to be held Nov. 16 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Hollywood. Angela was nommed three times was acting but never won. Steve has hosted and been nommed for a short but never won. Angie of course won for the 1999 flick “Girl, Interrupted,” and I don’t really love her getting another statuette. Yes, she’s done much work around the world for humanitarian causes and, yes, she’s been brave about her own personal health. But there are plenty of older, equally deserving people in Hollywood who’ve never won any awards at all, a list that includes Doris Day, a great humanitarian in her own right, as well as Leslie Caron, Kim Novak, and Debbie Reynolds. (And you can’t even say Angie got the award so she’ll add some glamour to the next big Oscar broadcast, since she’s being feted in November and not all honorary Oscar recipients attend the winter affair.) I’m most excited about the award for Tosi, because he did the costumes for some of my favorite Visconti movies: “The Leopard” and “Death in Venice” among them.
