But we have to give an A for effort to Bill Murray, who showed up on Letterman last night as Liberace. The desire to be ostentatious trumps the desire not to be perceived as gay, which is one of the many reasons that Liberace’s appeal, despite what many young folk today think, was primary to straight people. As a friend told me, just after he’d see Liberace years ago at Radio City: “The blue-haired lady in front of me said, ‘I wish my husband could be like that.'”
