New CD Is Inspired By “Gigi”
“Gigi,” from Lerner and Loewe, is one of the most lush, effervescent musicals ever committed to stage and film. I can’t watch it without giggling: even as a child, I couldn’t help snickering at Maurice Chevalier singing “Thank heaven for little girls.” Singer/composer Julia Holter also watched the movie as a kid. Her latest CD, “Loud City Song,” takes its narrative thrust from this musical about a teenage girl in turn-of-the-century Paris, raised to be a courtesan to wealthy men but longing for something more. Warning for theatre queens: Holter’s music is more indie than Broadway.
