Can Johnny Depp’s Career Be Saved?
My suggestion for Depp’s resuscitation: he should follow through on his desire to play Carol Channing. Of course, the idea that his career is nearly over is slightly silly. Depp is outrageously wealthy, and works all the time. But Mark Harris makes good points in this article. He writes: ‘It’s not that “The Lone Ranger” was the last straw; it’s that it felt like the 15th last straw in a row. And people who have come to view Depp as an actor in a rut of his own design seemingly had their suspicions confirmed when, last month, he walked away from a great and potentially revivifying challenge — the role of Boston gangster Whitey Bulger — reportedly because he wouldn’t lower his $23 million asking price to make the mid-budget film.’
