Sting’s Musical To Start Life In Chicago
LemonWade had a few spies at last Friday’s staged-reading performance of “The Last Ship,” a new musical with music and lyrics by Sting, book by John Logan and Brian Yorkey, and direction by Joe Mantello. All said spies were upbeat on the quality of the project, although none of them would venture a guess as to the show’s commercial prospects. The musical incorporates Sting’s boyhood home, Newcastle, England, for its locale. It features an original score, with a few pre-existing songs from Sting’s catalogue. And here’s the news: “The Last Ship” will have a full production in Chicago sometime in 2014, prior to sailing onto Broadway. Jeffrey Seller and Kathryn Schenker are producing.
