Who Will Star In New Movie “South Pacific”?

In Friday’s Daily Mail, showbiz columnist Baz Bamigboye writes that Michelle Williams (pictured) has been offered the role of Nellie Forbush in a new big screen version of “South Pacific.” (Yes, you complainers out there: she can sing.) I’d love to see another version, since the Mitzi Gaynor movie and the Glenn Close TV-movie version are underwhelming. Don’t get too excited yet about any casting. The planned film’s director Michael Mayer and team of producers have not yet entered official pre-production. There’s a rumor that the producers would like Hugh Jackman to play De Becque, but he’s known to have his eye on another character from the Rodgers and Hammerstein catalogue: “Carousel”’s Billy Bigelow, though that’s unlikely to happen soon and I’d say he’ll be too old but John Raitt played the character into his late 40s at least. As for “South Pacific,” there’s also chatter about trying to cast Justin Timberlake to play Lieutenant Cable, which would be pretty brilliant.
