Mariinsky 2 Opening: Watch It Here!
Mariinsky 2, second home to St.Petersburg’s legendary opera and ballet companies, opened without protest (and around $400 million over budget) on Thursday night at a gala performance that showed off the new theatre’s ultra-modern stagecraft and concluded with an chorus of “Happy Birthday” for Valery Gergiev, led by Placido Domingo. Gergiev conducted the star-studded event. Start at about the 22:00 minute mark of the video, otherwise you’ll have to suffer through a speech by Russian strongman Vladimir Putin.
