“Cabaret”: If Not Anne, How About Liza?

Okay, so there was this rumor yesterday that Anne Hathaway (pictured), among the most hated celebs in Hollywood (Gwyneth Paltrow is currently Star magazine’s Most Hated, as well as People’s Most Beautiful Woman Alive: coincidence?), was coming to Broadway in a revival of “Cabaret” with Alan Cumming, who did the show before. Her publicist shot back that the rumor wasn’t true. Does that mean that Liza Minnelli is free to join her good buddy Alan Cumming in the revival? (Alan hasn’t announced officially, but at least that rumor is still current.) As Sophia Petrillo would say: Picture it. Liza, who can barely walk these days and whose singing voice is some kind of unwonderful, returning to the scene of her iconic role, Sally Bowles, which she’s never done in a fully-staged production. I don’t care that she can’t dance. I told a friend that this problem could be solved by having chorus boys glide her around the Kit Kat Club. He replied, “She doesn’t need chorus boys; she needs professional movers.”
