MOMA Engages In “Cultural Vandalism”
Last week I visited the beautiful new building dedicated to the art of the Barnes Foundation, in Philadelphia. The architects were Tod Williams and Billie Tsien. Now comes news that the duo’s American Folk Art building (pictured), opened in 2001 in midtown Manhattan, will be demolished by the nearby Museum of Modern Art. Martin Filler calls this out for the crime that it is: ‘The tragic turn of events on 53rd Street is nothing less than cultural vandalism, made more odious because it will be carried out by a presumed institutional guardian of high culture and contemporary design.’
