HBO Wigs Out With “Phil Spector”
Did you catch “Phil Spector” last night on HBO? Can you believe what a complete piece of cheese it was? Apart from Helen Mirren‘s performance as Spector’s lawyer, the only reason to keep watching was to see the next wig Al Pacino would wear. I have no idea why HBO paid for this project, other than the fact that Al Pacino would star in it. David Mamet, who wrote the script and directed, failed to dramatize the subject. I’m not even sure there was a subject, so lacking in arc was the story. Was Mamet’s intention to show us how fame distorts people, as this commentator suggests? Perhaps. But even that theme left me unmoved.
