“Smash” vs. “Splash”: Who Won?

It doesn’t take much courage for me to say that I’ve gone off “Smash”: the piling-on has reached epic proportions this season. Even the “hate-watchers” seem to have gone away, and the collapsed ratings have caused NBC to exile it to Saturday night, a slot which is kinda like what my cousin Tommy used to call Florida: God’s Waiting Room. But I DVR’ed “Smash” last night, just as I DVR’d ABC’s new reality show, “Splash.” In other words, I had an “ash” bake-off. I lasted about five minutes with the latter. In truth, I’d only tuned in because I have great affection for Olympic champion Greg Louganis and he was the coach of the ten celebs who had turned up to dive. All of them, however, and the roster included Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Louie Anderson, didn’t get a chance to dive. Not that I hung around to tote them up: if, as TV analysts are saying, reality TV is on a slight decline, “Splash” is further proof. “Smash” wasn’t much better, but it was a kick to see Sean Hayes undertake a “Dangerous Liaisons”-type silly music number. Like the series itself, he fell on his face, but was a good sport about it.
