If you live in metropolitan New York, you can now watch many TV channels online, live, for eight dollars a month. It’s true that the number of channels at this point is pretty basic, but we’re at least making progress toward the day when not having cable doesn’t make a bit of difference. There’s already so much to watch online that a lot of my friends got rid of cable months ago, just as they — and we — got rid of our land lines years ago.
