Opera Awards: More Cutthroat Than Oscars?

Details of a new awards initiative for opera have been announced, with the inaugural prize-giving ceremony to be held in London on April 22. One category they don’t have but should: Best Rivalry. Nobody singing today could match that between Maria Callas (pictured) and Renata Tebaldi, but it could at least be the occasion for some fireworks a little brighter than the scripted campaigns we have to witness every year at this time for the Oscars.
