Hathaway To Do “Taming Of The Shrew”?
Now that she’s moved closer to the Oscar (sorry, all you Sally Field fans who feel that all “Lincoln”-nommed actors deserve multiple Oscars; I don’t), Anne Hathaway can turn her attention to the next project. Doesn’t look like it will be that Judy Garland biopic but rather a big-screen adaptation of Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” by Abi Morgan, the British screenwriter of “The Iron Lady.”
Shakespeare’s late 16th century comedy has been adapted dozens of times by Hollywood, notably in the 1967 version starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton and subsequently in the teen-oriented “10 Things About You,” starring Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles, in 1999. Morgan will reportedly transfer the action to the modern day, though it will still be set in Italy. The play has been criticized for its perceived misogyny, but remains one of Shakespeare’s more popular comedies.
