Which Holiday Movie Should You See?
For families, there’s only one non-animation choice, and it’s excellent: “Les Miserables.” Yeah, it’s relentlessly emotional, but don’t worry, guys, there’s more action in it than you think. For adults, I highly recommend “Silver Linings Playbook,” which manages rapid changes of tone in brilliant fashion, and was so good it made me admire Bradley Cooper for the first time. I also recommend “Zero Dark Thirty.” It’s well-made and crisply directed. Among the older movies, I suggest “Lincoln” (what a wonderful script by Tony Kushner!) and “Skyfall,” which made me, who usually skips Bond movies, revise my estimate. I do not recommend “Django Unchained“: Tarantino has some agile technique, but for proof of that re-watch “Kill Bill.” Spike Lee, perhaps envious of Tarantino’s box office, tweeted: “American Slavery Was Not A Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western. It Was A Holocaust. My Ancestors Are Slaves. Stolen From Africa. I Will Honor Them.” Oh, and Merry Christmas to the Knicks, too!
