Your Weekend: LemonWade Recommends
Movies: “Hyde Park on Hudson,” about the visit of King George VI and his wife to FDR’s family home, is a little tame, but there are many pleasures to be had from its actors, especially Bill Murray as the President. Television: HGTV has “Celebrity Holiday Homes” on Friday. Christmas fare is displacing most of my Sunday night dramas (“The Good Wife,” “Revenge”) for the rest of the month: thank God there’s a new “Homeland“: titled “The Motherfucker with a Turban.” And don’t miss another spy drama, “Restless,” premiering Friday. Music: The Olivia Newton-John/John Travolta holiday excrescence is driving me screaming back into the arms of Frank Ocean’s Grammy-nommed hip-hop/pop CD: “channel ORANGE.” Books: The new novel “The Twelve Tribes of Hattie,” by Ayana Mathis, interests me in spite of gaining Oprah’s imprimatur. Meanwhile, I’m still struggling to finish Dickens’s “Barnaby Rudge.” Rudge = drudge, I’m afraid. Sports: I don’t think my brothers can last another month pining for Notre Dame’s college-football-title game with Alabama. I can: I’m still happily in Knicksland. Finally: Whenever I hear about Congress and the President going off the fiscal cliff, I think of the final scene from “Thelma and Louise.”
