What Maurice Sendak Liked At The End
Maurice Sendak, who died last year and is best-known for “Where The Wild Things Are,” hated being called a “children’s illustrator.” Looking over the list of things he still cared about at the end of life, you would hardly call him confined to childish things: “Peace and quiet, helping young artists, The Odyssey, Marcel Proust, Henry James, George Eliot, Franz Schubert, Samuel Palmer, William Blake, the ancients, William Shakespeare, John Keats, all the people you love passionately, telling the truth, love affairs, noses.”
