Was Roy Lichtenstein A One-Trick Pony?
Was Roy Lichtenstein a great modern artist or a one-trick wonder? The American painter, who died in 1997, currently has a retrospective at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. According to this critic, Lichtenstein had one brilliant idea: to make full-scale paintings in the style of comic-book illustrations, translating their matrices of ink dots, block colors and crude, adolescent emotions on to canvas. Why did he get stuck? Or did he?
