London Theatre To Stage Pussy Riot Protest
Taking inspiration from Russia’s feminist punk band (pictured), the Royal Court Theatre in London will host its own Pussy Riot protest in early November. While I agree that the fate of the women — three members of the group were jailed in August and later convicted for hooliganism after stating an anti-Putin “punk prayer” in Moscow’s main cathedral — has deserved worldwide outrage, the reason the protest had strong meaning was that it was risky and pushed back boldly against a censorious regime. An event at a left-leaning theatre in a liberal democracy to express solidarity is hardly a protest: more like a self-congratulatory exercise in political expression.
