Kennedy Center Honorees: A Mixed Bag

The Kennedy Center honorees have been announced: Dustin Hoffman (pictured), David Letterman, Natalia Makarova, Buddy Guy, and Led Zeppelin. Only one woman out of five? Not great. And two of the five aren’t American. I thought the Kennedy Center was founded to privilege American artists. There’s no one in that list primarily associated with theater (if they’re not going to privilege Americans, why haven’t they honored Tom Stoppard, the greatest living English-language playwright? And why has Carol Channing never won?). And there’s no one associated with classical music. All in all, not my favorite list, much as I love Dustin Hoffman and Buddy Guy.
