Mormon Church Hates “Book Of Mormon”?
Au contraire. The church approves of the show so much that it buys three full-page ads in the Playbill program each theatergoer gets. As I said before the show opened on Broadway, and there was talk of the musical being enrolled in the culture wars: no show whose memorable number is called “I Believe” is going to be strung up for blasphemy. The problem with “The Book of Mormon” is that for all its supposed irreverence it’s really one big commercial for the Utah-based church.
