“Anna Karenina”: Dark, Expressionist

It seems as if all the “important” autumn movies have been screened for reviewers the past few days. Latest: Tom Stoppard‘s adaptation of “Anna Karenina,” starring Keira Knightley. Variety says: ‘Eschewing the classical realism that’s characterized most adaptations of Tolstoy’s source novel, helmer Joe Wright makes the generally inspired decision to stylize his dark, expressionist take on the Russian classic “Anna Karenina.”‘ But the review also says: ‘The pic feels unmistakably chilly, and not just because of all the snow.’
