Online TV Service Aereo To Expand
Ever wondered why you can’t watch regular broadcast TV directly on your tablet or laptop — more comprehensively than on services like Hulu, I mean? So did media mogul Barry Diller, which is why he backed the online-TV service Aereo. After batting away a lawsuit, Diller has just told Bloomberg at the 30th annual Allen & Co. gathering of media and tech moguls in Sun Valley, Idaho that Aereo would move beyond New York to other large cities. “We’re going to really start marketing,†Bloomberg quoted him as saying. “Within a year and a half, certainly by ’13, we’ll be in most major” markets. A U.S. district judge this week allowed Aereo to continue operating while entertainment conglomerates and their broadcast networks continue to pursue a copyright lawsuit. Aereo streams broadcast signals to such devices as iPads without paying the networks.
