Todd McCarthy: Tribute To Andrew Sarris
I am a big fan of the film reviewer Todd McCarthy, so I was interested to see what he would say in his tribute to critic Andrew Sarris (pictured), who has died. McCarthy confesses: ‘Andrew Sarris was the man who taught me how to do what I do. Without him, I would never have experienced the cinema in the way that I have or been provided with such an inspiring road map to pursue what, for all of us in the critical and historical film world, is the endless quest for discovery of little-known works and artists.’ I was always more in the camp of Pauline Kael myself, even before I worked at The New Yorker. But Sarris remained readable and thought-provoking till the very end.
