Tony Awards On Sunday: Predictions

When it comes to the Tony awards, which will be held on Sunday, I’m a strict redistributive socialist. I don’t want anyone who has won before to win again. Does Audra McDonald, whose going to win for “Porgy and Bess,” really need another Tony award? Does Mike Nichols, whose going to win for “Death of a Salesman,” really need another statue? What about encouraging talent a little less famous? Most of the expert predictions on the Gold Derby site seem pretty sensible to me. The closest races are for Best Musical (“Once” vs. “Newsies”), Best Actress/Play (Nina Arianda or Tracie Bennett?), Best Actor/Musical (Steve Kazee vs. Jeremy Jordan vs. Danny Burstein), and Best Actor/Play (Philip Seymour Hoffman vs. James Corden).
