My Memorial Day Weekend So Far…
Music: I saw Beyonce (pictured) in concert at the grand opening of Revel casino in Atlantic City. It wasn’t her best show ever, but lot’s of fun, including a Whitney cover, most of her greatest hits, and the usual precision dancing. The Obamas came to see her the night after I did, creating security nightmares for my friends who were there that night. Television: The Blackwater battle of “Game of Thrones” was tremendous. All those ships storming the battlements was spectacularly evocative, and the action sequences were much more exciting than anything at the multiplex. Books: Richard Mason’s novel “History of a Pleasure Seeker” is almost bodice-ripping in its account of a young sensualist in early-20th-century Amsterdam (and other places), but the prose is mostly sparkling. Sports: I’m consoling myself for the Rangers hockey-playoff loss by watching the French Open. Movies: I’m planning to catch up to the Judi Dench/Maggie Smith movie today: more on that tomorrow. Finally: It’s Memorial Day. Remember our troops!
