PBS Enters The Reality-Show Sweepstakes
It’s a wonder that PBS has resisted the competitive-reality-show genre for so many years. No longer: Announced for the fall is a show called “Broadway or Bust.” It is a three-part documentary series that tracks the real-life stories of America’s top high school musical performers, vying in the ultimate competition to find the nation’s best young theater stars. “Smash,” anyone? “Glee,” anyone? Which just ended its season with a national competition in which show choirs full of top high school musical performers vied for the crown. But “Glee” (pictured) is scripted, and, being old-fashioned, I prefer performers being made cleverer and more vivid than they are in real life.
