“Upstairs Downstairs” Put Out Of Misery
I love the dry, understated way that the BBC announced this week that the reboot of “Upstairs Downstairs” would not last beyond its second season: “There are no plans for ‘Upstairs Downstairs’ to return.” There was, of course, no mention of the elephant in the room: “Downton Abbey.” That wouldn’t be sporting to Jean Marsh and Eileen Atkins, who created the original “Upstairs Downstairs” in the 1970s and were involved in the revision. And who publicly complained when “Downton” stole their fire.
