Finnish opera singer Karita Mattila’s performance of Salome at the Metropolitan Opera was one of the most electric things I’ve ever seen. She returns to the Met tomorrow in Janacek’s “Makropulos Case.” In this interview with the diva, who has been as acclaimed for her acting as for her singing, we learn that she hews to the principles of acting teacher Uta Hagen.
