New “Titanic” Induces A Sinking Feeling
The first episode of the TV miniseries “Titanic” premiered over the weekend on Britain’s ITV. Two friends who saw it from the comfort of American homes (isn’t technology wonderful?) gave the maiden voyage mixed reviews, an overall opinion seconded by London-based critics (reviews here and here). The Titanic story may have a built-in appeal, but since we know the outcome there is increased pressure to make the characters engaging. This version is being called “Downton-on-Sea,” owing to its writer, Julian Fellowes, being the creator of “Downton Abbey.” “Titanic” will air in the U.S. on ABC starting on April 14, exactly 100 hundred years from when the iceberg hit.
