“Sweeney Todd” Wows ‘Em In London
A production of Sondheim’s “Sweeney Todd” opened in London this week to terrific acclaim. (Review round-up here.) It stars Imelda Staunton and Michael Ball (pictured). Whenever a London production of a Sondheim show gets this kind of response there is talk of transferring it to New York. (The last Broadway revival of “Sweeney” originated in Britain.) It would be nice if New York could originate a first-rate Sondheim production one of these days. In the meantime, London’s calling.
