5 Sports Arenas Fit For Opera
The Dallas Opera will simulcast Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” at Cowboys Stadium (pictured) on April 28. The news got me to thinking of other sports arenas where operas could be matched to the masses:
1) Yankee Stadium, the Bronx. Given that no sports team has more hubris than the Yanks, the obvious choice is Mozart’s “Don Giovanni.” Pride goeth before the fall.
2) Lambeau Field, Green Bay. In spite the Frenchy name of the place, Wisconsin is best known for things German, beginning with beer. So why not Wagner’s “Das Rheingold”?
3) TD Garden, Boston. It’s where the NBA’s Celtics play. With a name like the Celtics, we’d better program Wagner’s opera about a “wild Irish maid”: “Tristan und Isolde.”
4) North Charleston Coliseum, . “Porgy and Bess” takes place in Charleston, so there is no other choice.
5) The Superdome, New Orleans. Puccini’s “Manon Lescaut” takes place partly in New Orleans, so it’s obvi, too.
