Gay Critics Salute “Weekend”
The Gay and Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association have named “Weekend” (pictured), a British film about a relationship that develops between two men in the course of a hook-up, as the Best Film of the Year. Hard to argue with that. On the other hand, did the group have to give Meryl Streep the film performance of the year award for her sympathetic interpretation of gay-hating Margaret Thatcher in “The Iron Lady”? And how about their selection of Michael Fassbender as the “We’re Wilde About You Rising Star of the Year” prize for his performance as a sex addict in “Shame”: you know, the movie in which getting blown at a gay club represents the nadir of degradation? Also annoying: the group’s selection of “Revenge” as the campiest TV show of the year. Best melodrama, maybe, but campiest? That implies that the show’s queen bee, played by Madeleine Stowe, is a diva, when, in fact, she is a goddess! If the group wanted to salute campy, they should have singled out Jessica Lange in “American Horror Show.” Instead, the critics gave Lange TV performance of the year.
