“Into The Woods” Film In The Works
Rob Marshall, who among many other accomplishments is the only gay man to direct one of the Top Ten earners of all time at the movie box office (not adjusted for inflation) with this year’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” has lined up a new project: a movie version of Sondheim and Lapine’s musical “Into the Woods.” My Sondheimian friends always talk about “Follies” and “Company” and “Sweeney Todd” and “Sunday in the Park” and seem not to realize that it is actually “Into the Woods” that is more familiar to non-sophisticates: you think high schools will do a story of cynical adulterers and faded chorus girls (“Follies”) instead of something about Jack and the Beanstalk? I think not. No casting announced yet for “Into the Woods.” This being Hollywood, you know they’ll stock it up with the teen idols of the moment. And if Meryl Streep hasn’t already been put top of the list to play the Witch I’ll eat my edible undies.
